How to Convert GLB to STL
By SnapTo3D · Published
Convert GLB to STL by importing the GLB into a compatible 3D application, selecting the intended mesh, and exporting STL. This changes the file format; it does not make the model printable or preserve its textures.
Before you start
Keep the original GLB. Work on a copy and decide which pose and physical height you want. If the asset is animated, a print requires a single static shape, not an animation timeline. Preparing a posed mesh may require additional work before export.
Import and export in Blender
These are file-conversion steps. If your importer cannot decode the GLB’s compression or textures, resolve that import problem first rather than exporting an incomplete scene.
- Open a clean scene. Use File → Import → glTF 2.0 to select your GLB.
- Confirm that the expected mesh appears before continuing. Inspect all objects in the scene, not only the front view.
- Select the intended character mesh objects; exclude lights, cameras and unrelated scene objects.
- Use File → Export → STL. Enable Selection Only when exporting the selected character.
- Review scale and Scene Unit settings, then export a new STL without overwriting the GLB.
Verify size in the slicer
Open the STL in your chosen slicer and read its dimensions. STL does not provide a dependable unit agreement between applications; confirm the actual height in millimeters rather than relying on the export looking correct.
For example, if you intend a 100 mm figurine, check that the slicer shows approximately that height. Review width and depth as well, so that fixing one axis has not distorted the character. This is a sizing example, not a recommended size for every model.
Check geometry before printing
- Inspect holes, open edges, intersecting shells and disconnected pieces.
- Review fingers, hair tips and accessories for fragile or unsupported features.
- Confirm that the pose is stable or that a suitable base can be prepared.
- Preview sliced layers for missing surfaces and unexpected gaps.
- Choose orientation, supports and material with your printer or service provider.
What conversion cannot preserve
The textured appearance of the GLB is not transferred as a printable color surface in ordinary STL. A pattern that exists only in a texture will not become raised geometry. Use a production workflow that explicitly supports color if color is important.
If the conversion fails
If the GLB is invisible after import, verify the file in its original viewer and check the importing tool’s extension support. If the STL is empty, recheck object selection. If details disappear only after slicing, investigate dimensions and geometry rather than repeatedly converting the same file.
SnapTo3D’s figurine flow starts with an eligible character in your library. It is not an arbitrary external-GLB upload and printing service.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting GLB to STL make it watertight?
No. Export changes representation, not the suitability of the mesh for manufacturing. Check and repair geometry separately.
Will the STL keep the GLB colors?
Do not expect ordinary STL to preserve GLB materials and texture images. Confirm any color workflow with your production provider.
